Tips for Finding a Part-Time Job In addition to checking out the top online job search sites, arm yourself with knowledge. Here are some tips to help you ace your job search and land the part-time job you want Think about your schedule. Before even beginning your job search, think about your schedule. What kind of work schedule do you want? Some part-time jobs are shift work, which means you have to be able to work a variety of hours. This might be ideal for you if y ou have a flexible schedule. However, if you can only work certain hours of the day (or certain days of the week), keep this in mind when job searching. Most job listings will give you a sense of the kind of schedule you would have, so only apply to things that fit your lifestyle. Express availability. When you apply for a job, be sure to express your flexibility in your job materials and during your interview. You want to show that you are willing to work whatever hours are required, especially if you are working a shift job. While you do not want to lie (dont say you can work nights if you cant, for example), try to highlight your ability to work whenever you are needed. Show commitment. Many part-time jobs see a lot of turnover. Employees tend to leave quickly, either because they are students returning to class, or because they find a full-time job. Try to emphasize in your job materials and interview that you are committed to the position. Employers will appreciate a candidate who is excited about the job and isnt planning to leave right away. Show, dont tell. In your resume and cover letter, avoid clich phrases like self-starter and works well with others. Rather than telling the employer who you are, show them. For example, if you want to show that you work well with others, provide an example in your cover letter of a successful team project you worked on. Also, when possible, use numbers to demonstrate your success. If you want to show your previous experience handling money, you might say in your resume that you Managed senior class budget of over $10,000. This kind of information will impress the hiring manager, and show who you are as an employee. Treat the process like a full-time job search. Keep in mind that applying for a part-time job is very much the same as applying for a full-time job. You will still generally need to submit a resume and cover letter (although some places will only ask for a job application and maybe a resume, especially if you apply in person). You also want to take the interview seriously. Be sure to research the company and prepare answers to common interview questions in advance (as well as answers to these common part-time job interview questions). Dress in appropriate interview attire as well business professional is typical, although you can wear business casual for a more informal work environment. By dressing appropriately, the employer will appreciate that you are taking the process seriously. It will show him or her how much you want the job. Consider temporary work. If you are having trouble finding a part-time job, consider temporary work. You can search on job sites or work with a temp agency to find short-term positions. Some of these jobs can last days, weeks, or even months, and you can sometimes turn a temp position into a permanent one. Some of these are full-time, but others are part-time.

Pros and Cons of working in a startup

Pros and Cons of working in a startupPros and Cons of working in a startupIn todays world of new technologies and ways of working, the criteria for the perfect job has changed. We want more from a potential employer, a home office option, gruppe-building events, good company culture and others. While many companies have already adopted the new ways of working, the ones ahead of everyone are definitely startups. We hear and read the word startupevery day on the news, in online magazines, on social media, etc. And there are a lot of definitions that suggest what a startup actually is.Lets agree that a startup is a company which can result in both massive success or a major fail. Startup members are all motivated to achieve exceptional growth and are excited to make animmediate impact on the targeted market. All this sounds great, but while working in a startup one could face some challenges as well. To make it more clear, we created a list of Pros and Cons which will help you understand what working in astartup means in reality and whether it would be the right place for you to work at.1.Flexible working hoursPros+ Avoiding the traffic rush hour. Most of the companies have set working hours (9-5) which means the early morning traffic when everyone rushes to be at work on time is a nightmare.** Therefore, if you are able to come to work later, you avoid the stress and arrivein a much better mood.+ The ability to make other important activities before work. You need to pop in a bank, binnensee a doctor or a dentist, drive your mom to the center, you name it. If you work in a startup where working hours are flexible, you will always have the freedom to do these things whenever you decide. This enables you to manage your work-life balance in the most effective way.+ Schedule your work in quiet times or different places. Often you have an important due date or you just need some quiet time to focus on the project properly. In a startup, you can schedule your working ti me and place. You are able to come to the office early in the morning or stay in till later evening when its the least likely for others to be there. Or if you feel distracted, choose other places to work from. Home, your favorite cafeteria or even the beachCons Trust and fairness. It can be challenging to keep track of everyones working hours or the effectiveness of their performance. If you cant monitor that, such situations could tear the trust between kollektiv members.Related articles7 Mistakes That Are Common In College Students Resumes and How to Fix ThemWhat stops us from changing careers? How we screwed up an awesome feature (and learned our lesson)2. The office spacePros+ Interaction. Startups usually work in shared spaces which allownetworking with other people from other businesses who can encourage the flow of creative ideas. Most startups tend to work closely together, build their community and share ideas and ways of improvements with each other.+ Closeness. To work in a smaller office space stimulates more conversations. This leads to getting to know the real person in each one of your co-workers. And that leads to deeper friendships. There is elendhing better than working with friends, people who understand and support you.Cons Lack of concentration. As much as it could be positive that there is always someone around, it could also be a negative. Small space office could create tension between team members and also decrease their productivity.3. Smaller teamPros+ Communication. In a smaller team, it is easier to interact with one aleidher and it also allows each team member to get to the right person and get answers they need much faster. Also, team meetings tend to be shorter because there is a smaller number of team members who need to report/discuss the issue. Like that everyone has more time to focus on their own tasks. Furthermore, it is easier to keep everyone up to date with changes, decisions, and due dates.+ Focus. Smaller groups of pe ople tend to focus more on the tasks they are given and put more effort into their assignments. They realize that their output depends on their efforts and it allows them to take ownership to the results. It is also easier for the founders to focus on each person individually and provide help where needed.+ Motivation. Startups usually consist of people who come from different backgrounds, however, share the same goal and usually are passionate about similar things. They strive for knowledge and have a lot of will to make the company successful. This kind of people create an environment which drives the team forward.+ Decision making. In a startup, when any changes are about to be made, you will always be able to share your opinion and contribute to decision making. Like that the startup team members feel like they are a valued part of the company and it increases their morale and motivation.+ Organizing events together. If the team is smaller, it is much easier to organize differen t activities together and ensure a 100% attendance. It could sound like a cliche, but a startup follows the rule Work hard, play hardCons The amount of work. Workload many times outweighs the number of people in a team and there are times when everyone is too busy to help others with their tasks and problems. Employees could get confused, tired and overwhelmed.4. Self-developmentPros+ Productivity. In a startup, it is a must to self-teach yourself on many topics. A lot of times there are situations when one person wears many hats and needs to do something theyve never done before. Getting out of a comfort zone is a part of everyday life in startups.+ Embracing mistakes. Everyone in a startup ends up making a mistake at some point. It is exactly because they do things they only read about and never tried doing in real life. One mistake can affect the business hugely, but it can also provide an invaluable lesson which contributes to the future development of the whole company.+ Meeti ng new, inspiring people. In a process of looking for potential investors, you are very likely to find your mentors. Startup founders are usually individuals with less experience but with amazing ideas. Their support comes from much more experienced people. They teach them a lot, provide them with valuable adviceand link them to other influencers.Cons Lack of enthusiasm. It could be very challenging for people who are not self-driven and need someone to motivate them to give their best at all times. Being a part of a startup means overlooking fear of failure, believing in your abilities and stimulating your pro-activity. If you dont possess these qualities, astartup is probably not the right workplace for you. Overtimes. Because one has to do several jobs at the same time, there is a high chance that your working hours are going to double up at some point.5. The moneyPros+ Experience.Startups usually allow you to really focus on developing your talents or help you improve in areas wh ere your weaknesses lay. Except for money, you get paid in experience. And lets be honest, there is no value you can put on that+ Shares. Also, a great thing about startups is that all workers are able to own shares of the company. So whenit will become a success, except for a salary higher than many in large organizations, you also own a chunk of the businessCons The salary. At the beginning, you might not get paid as much as you would in a large company. Every startup invests most of the money into new opportunities and products and investing in people is not always the priority. So, you need to be ready to work hard and prepare for situations when you might not get the money you deserve immediately due to a bad month. Investors search. In a startup, unless you have a lot of your own capital, you have to look for potential investors and persuade them that your idea is worth investing their money into. This very long and difficult process requires a lot of patience, time effort. Many big companies, including Apple and Google, started literally in a garage. Their founders transformed a simple idea into a hugely successful business. And thereforewe think it is worth considering to start your career in a startup, which could have the same future. This list should give you a general idea of what it means to work in one and if you decide to give it a go, dont give up when the first trouble arrives. Accept the challenges that are ahead of you and do your best.Network, learn, focus. Believe in the potential of the company you are working for. What other Pros Cons do you think weve missed?PS Dont forget to tag your startup ?

This is how you can use anxiety to help you succeed

This is how you can use anxiety to help you succeedThis is how you can use anxiety to help you succeedGood news for worrywarts everywhere. Your ability to remember events in excruciating, embarrassing detail can actually be a benefit that sets you apart from the rest. A new study found that people with manageable levels of anxiety were able to improve their ability to recall memories. How to use anxiety to your advantageIn a study for Brain Sciences, researchers from the University of Waterloo decided to test the power of anxiety. Eighty undergraduate students were recruited to report their levels of anxiety and take a memory test. The students were asked to remember words overlaid with images. When the images were associated with negative events like car accidents, the anxious students scored higher on the memory test - better able to make connections than their less anxious brethren.Emotional events from the past can taint our perception of the present, making current circumstances more memorable, the researchers conclude in the study. When we constrain our memory search to information or events encountered within a negative context, or learnt using a negative mode of processing, some memory benefit heldby those thoughts may be conferred unto incidental stimuli within our current environment. In other words, anxiety could be honing your ability to focus and recall detailed information. This study is part of ongoing research that is complicating the downsides of anxiety and worrying. One 2017 Stanford study found that elderly participants who worried were able to offset some of the negative effects on memory caused by flaute and anxiety. There is still a mental cost to anxietyThe butterflies in your stomach can be helpful when you need to remember a clients name, but researchers caution that anxietys memory superpower can become an unhelpful crutch. When youre anxious, youre more susceptible to using negative emotional cues to make connections about the world ar ound you.The researchers call this negative retrieval mode, which can create negative biases around neutral events. When youre anxious, that difficult meeting with clients carries outsized importance, and your feelings about that one clients tone may cloud your objective judgment about what you remember. Its a reminder to be mindful of separating fact from fiction in our memories. When anxiety veers into obsessive rumination, the bad feelings can outweigh the potential memory benefits. If anxiety and worrying are running your life, there are research-backed tips to let it go. They begin with acknowledging that we are all on this embarrassing and sometimes-anxious journey called life together. For many of us, working anxious-free is an impossibility. There will always be deadlines that make us sweat, presentations that make our hearts race. What this study shows is that anxiety does not always have to be an emotion that holds your mind back. In some situations, it can even be an advant age.

When Hiring Managers Disagree on a Candidate - Spark Hire

When Hiring Managers Disagree on a Candidate - Spark HireFinding that person perfect for the job can be a difficult task. Hiring managers and employers know that all too well. It is especially difficult if there is more than one person in on the decision. You have to agree on what you think is most important in a candidate and whether or not any of your candidates fit that description. You might think that Candidate A is best, but your colleague might believe Candidate B is better suited. Whats even more difficult is disagreeing with a superior. Perhaps you are hiring for a marketing assistant and believe you found the best fit. Only problem? The marketing director doesnt agree with you. It can be a tough situation, but there are certain things you can do as hiring manager to help you through it.Understand the RoleSpark Hire has discussed this a lot, but thats only because it is very important. As hiring manager, it is without a doubt your responsibility to make koranvers you underst and the role you are hiring for. This is especially true if you are hiring for multiple departments in the company. If you come to a disagreement on a candidate, then the first thing to do is to hark back to the role itself. Sit down with the other person that is in on the decision and list all of the qualifications you both think are needed to fill the position. Once that is done- and it should be before you even start hiring- break down the candidates in question. What skills does your candidate have that match this job role? Why do you think they are best fitted for this position? Are there some things missing? The next best thing would be to take a look at the candidate your colleague thinks is the best. Do the skills match up? What does this candidate have that yours does not? Compare and contrast the candidates and try to understand why your colleague thinks Candidate B is best. If you did not personally interview this candidate yourself, it can be difficult to understand where they are coming from. Which leads us to our next tipUse Video InterviewsIn the off chance that you interviewed one candidate and your colleague or superior interviewed another, it can sometimes be difficult to understand why they appreciated one over the other. Especially since you didnt get to meet and interact with them personally. This is one big reason why video interviews are such a great tool in the hiring process. When you interview with candidates online through video interviews, the interview is recorded. Not only is it of great use to you- in case you want to go back and check their personality or communication skills again- but its a great tool to use in comparing and contrasting candidates.Company CultureAnother thing to keep in mind when disagreeing on a candidate is company culture fit. Before you make a decision, or think that your candidate is by far the best for the job, keep the company culture in mind. Your candidate might have all of the right skills and qualifi cations, but perhaps the candidate your colleague wants is the best company culture fit. Or vice versa. Remember that certain skills can always be learned and picked up, but company culture fit cannot be faked or learned. There can be an employee that works in a company and has all of the right skills, but if they do not fit in with the company culture it is sure to cause waves. On top of that, it will be much easier for an employee like that to jump ship as soon as another job offer rolls around.Disagreeing on a candidate can be a tough situation to tackle, but with the right tools and the right outlook- you and your colleague can certainly come to a decision. And the best decision at thatHave you ever had to compromise on a hire because you disagreed with a colleague? How You Can Put Yourself on a New Career Path

How You Can Put Yourself on a New Career Path How You Can Put Yourself on a New Career Path Article by Aliya MarderNobody wants to second-guess their career choices - yet there I welches, in my first real UX role designing the interface for a mobile game, wondering whether Id made the right call.My worry? The flat visual mockups and addictive user flows that I was working on delivered value for the company, not necessarily the user. When it came time to make strategic decisions about the gamers experience, I didnt have a seat at the table. To secure that seat, I decided to try engineering. Id enjoyed learning code, and the developers I knew had authority and ownership in a way that their design peers at the time, myself included, didnt have.So I took a job as a part-time UX designer. The product leader who hired me - an engineer himself and also an amazing person - agreed to help me improve my development skills by working on the code base on my days off.I loved it. At first, I t hought it was just learning a new skill. Then, I noticed something My design and strategy muscles were being flexed as well. Id become the customers voice on my team. Id taken part in important decisions not just about the product, but also about the company itself.Thats when it hit me I wanted all three skill sets because they made me a better team member and a stronger leader. It took me years to discover it, but I was looking for the balance of community, creativity, and individual challenge that only a hybrid role could provide.Experimenting to Find Your FutureA little of everything isnt a career option that Id considered in school. Although I didnt realize it at the time, I discovered my path by applying experiment-driven design to my career1. Discover Your Ws Who, Where, and WhyI dont believe that anyone is born to do a certain job. Lets say, for example, that you thrive on solving a single hard problem and I prefer to jump between ideas. If each of us found a supportive envir onment, wed make equally good engineers or designers.Initially, I discovered UX design by talking with a friend. His startup was looking for a UX designer, but Id never even heard of it. He described a role that sounded amazing talking to people, solving problems, and being thoughtful and creative. I didnt have the skills to commit then and there, but I did realize that I deeply valued that sort of work.Whether you know what you want to pursue or just have an inkling, ask yourself why. Put pen to paper, and write freely for five minutes. Review your list, and keep asking yourself why. Do the exercise again and again until you feel like you have nothing more to give. Youll feel a sense of deep satisfaction once youve uncovered the reasons behind your inclination your terminal values. Once youve discovered those, you can carve a path that lets you feed them.2. Experiment Through PlayI like to play a game I call Design Improvements in the Wild. As Im going about my daily life - readin g magazines, grocery shopping, whatever it may be - I look for kerning errors, bad copy, silly Photoshop mistakes, and unclear buttons. Its fun, to be sure, but its also a way for me to sharpen my skills.I began playing this game long before I became a professional UX designer. It was my way of putting on the design-thinking hat, of faking it until I made it. It was experimenting Do I enjoy doing this? Do I like thinking this way?Find ways to experiment with new skills every day to set you down your path. bestattungs a small project here and a volunteer gig there. If you want to be a lawyer, intern at your district court. If you want to be a yoga instructor, ask a teacher you admire to mentor you once a week. You dont have to quit your job to startBut before you do anything else, understand that it takes a beginners mindset. Its critical to give yourself the freedom to fail. Youre going to stumble, but youre not going to give up.3. Evaluate Your ExperimentAs I took on small project s and critiqued fonts in my free time, I was collecting information about how I felt. When I first started UX design, my goal was to have a job in four months. Two months in, Id failed to hit expectations on a project. The design was terrible, and the client was angry. I felt like UX design was the worst decision Id ever made, and I almost quit right there. But two things kept me going One, I was only halfway through my experiment. Two, I liked the work even when it was hard. No, it wasnt particularly fun being told that my work wasnt up to par - but the experiment wasnt over, and until it was, I wouldnt have the information I needed to decide whether to persevere or pivot. At the end of your experiment, whether it succeeded or failed, look back at your whys. Did interacting with people for a living turn out to be as stimulating as youd hoped? Did you find something new to enjoy during your stint at the law firm? If you failed, what kept you moving and why? If your answers align with your values, persevere. If not, pivot. If you do have to pivot, dont dwell on it. Not every role is going to align with your values and sense of self. But if it did, keep going. Reach for that next rung on the ladder youre trying to climb. I have yet to meet someone who is unhappy while learning about something that interests them. Challenged? Yes. Exhausted? Perhaps. But deeply unhappy? No.Ultimately, remember that its not really about success or failure at all. You designed your experiment explicitly to help yourself. If you found a career you love, thats a valuable outcome. If you discovered that you didnt want to pursue something, thats valuable, too. But most of all, you gave yourself the freedom to learn, to be a beginner again and to try something new. That, I think youll agree, is the most valuable outcome of all.A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.Aliya Marder is an associate director and designer at Philosophie, a digital innovation firm with offic es in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, and Seattle. How Can Moms Choose the Best Jobs for Them

How Can Moms Choose the Best Jobs for ThemHow Can Moms Choose the Best Jobs for Them3Pursue your passion. How do moms choose the best jobs for them? If you were a mortgage broker B.C. (Before Children) and loved it, then it makes sense that you would continue on where you left off in your career. But if your job before having your baby was simply that- a job- then it might be time to turn over a new leaf. When the kids are in bed, sit down and think about what you would really like to do with your life. Think about the things that bring you joy and happiness. For the moment, remove all thoughts of money from your mind. That way, you can more clearly consider what it is that you would like to do.Chances are, you may have discovered a new found passion for something like college admissions (having written so many great applications for your childs school). Or you may rekindle an old desire to become the next Great American Novelist. The important thing to remember is that there is no wr ong answer when choosing your career or considering becoming a career changer. Your job should be something that brings you happiness, because then you will definitely work harder and be even better at it. There a lot of ways moms choose the best jobs for them, finding your passion is a good start.Determine your salary needs. Now its time to think about dollars and cents. Sure, going back to work will bring a boost to your household budget, but you have to determine all the financial factors first. Youll need to go through your finances to determine how much money you (and your partner, if you have one) will need to keep your household afloat. Then look for jobs within the career field of your choice to find comparable salaries. Salary needs are another good example of how moms choose the best jobs for them.Remember to factor in all the expenses that come with having a job. If you have a part-time job, youll need to add up your commuting costs, business clothing costs, and possible c hild care costs. Once youve added all that up and subtracted it from what youll potentially be making, will it be enough?Find your flex. If you want to return to work, but find that having an office job is simply not affordable, you should consider finding a flexible position. Yes, you will have expenses (such as setting up your home office and an increase in your electricity, for example), but you will save upwards of $11,000 annually by working from home. An even bigger benefit by telecommuting, youll get to have what office workers dont really get to experience- work-life balance. Thats why many working parents who are thinking of returning to the workforce opt for a job with workplace flexibility. That way, they can segue back into work mode but still be there for all of their childs important moments, too.It may seem scary to return to the workforce after spending time being a stay-at-home mom. But its incredibly exciting to rediscover who you are- and who youre meant to be- wh en you become a working parent. Youll get to contribute financially to your family and be a great role model for your children, showing them how it is possible to have a job you love and still be there for them, too. There are many ways moms choose the best jobs for them, the important thing is that they do.Readers, are you returning to the workforce after being a stay-at-home parent? How do you think moms choose the best jobs for them? What are some of your biggest concerns? Let us know in the comments section below

How to Present a Job Gap in a Positive Light

How to Present a Job Gap in a Positive Light How to Present a Job Gap in a Positive Light 10 It could be that the problem is the way she presents this period of time in her resume- is it addressed at all? Trying to hide it by avoiding bringing it up is a bad idea. Is it a future employers business to know exactly why you have a gap in your resume? What about the many temporary jobs she has been doing to pay the bills while trying to find full-time work? Should this be added? Here are a few tips on how to present a job gap in your job search in a positive light! Consider a functional resume. Most employers understand that there will be recovery periods after surgery, and will appreciate the responsible behavior that makes sure you can pay bills on time with temporary positions. The functional resume is a good way to put  gaps in work history  in the best light. Consider the many options it gives you. It will help you: highlight skills and experience in a Professional Experience section list employers in reverse-chronological order in a Work History section include all volunteer experience and lessons learned during time off be prepared to answer questions about gaps during the interview Time taken to recover after major surgery means you are in good health and able to work. The temporary jobs taken during the job search prove that fact. They also show your work ethic and reliability. These are valuable assets to an employer and your resume should show it. Of course, health issues are not the only reasons for job gaps. Being let go/downsized is another reason. Add a long, drawn out job search and you might be looking at a six months or year-long job gap. Or for some clients, taking years off to stay home and raise children. We have many clients who take five, 10, even 20 years off to raise a family and are getting into the job market again. Honesty is the best policy. The bottom line is the employer or hiring person wants to know what you have been doing with your time. If you took a year-long sabbatical and traveled the world, let them know! Stayed home and raised children? Be honest about it. An easy way to do this is to simply add a sentence or two about it in your cover letter. Something like, “After taking time off to raise my children, I am eager to return to product marketing…” Short and sweet. It lets the reader know what you were doing, or what the reason of the gap was. What did you do with your time off? Volunteer at your child’s school? Think of your responsibilities during that time. You’ll be able to add that both in the cover letter and the resume. Did you take an online course while caring for an aging parent? That needs to be added as well. Start up a small business or consulting company? Use those skills to transition into your next role. What you thought was a problem in your career chronology may not be a problem at all. Use what you did during your unemployment to your advantage. Your job gap may turn out to be the thing that lands you your next job! Readers, do you have a gap in your resume? Men look more successful with hair, study finds

Men look more successful with hair, study finds Men look more successful with hair, study finds Like the Biblical Samson, who lost his power after his hair was cut off by Delilah - hair makes the man, a recent survey of U.S. men’s hair habits found.Dove Men+Care surveyed 2,000 men across America and found that the majority of them tie their work identities to their hair follicles. In the hair census, 8 in 10 men  said that their hair made them look professional, the look of it was important, and that their hair helps them feel confident. Perhaps the majority of these men are preoccupied with their hair because they recognize what science has found: that societies judge men on how much hair they have on their heads.Studies: Hair makes the difference in people seeing men as successfulA study in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery found that a few more hair follicles can make all the difference between people seeing you as a success or a lost cause. The Johns Hopkins University researchers recruited participants to compare photos of men before and after they got a hair transplant. Altho ugh they were looking at the same men, participants rated men after they got their hair transplants as more attractive, approachable, and successful. No wonder then that hair transplants were among the most popular cosmetic procedure men are seeking to get done, with  11,000 procedures done in 2014.But, when it comes to being bald, all-in is bestIf you’re balding, research suggests embracing your chrome dome fully if you want to increase your social standing. A study in Social Psychological and Personality Science journal  found that American men who make the choice to forego their thinning locks and proactively shave what’s left of their hair are seen as more dominant than men who are only partially bald. When researchers showed participants photos of men with some hair and the same men with digitally shorn heads, the virtually shaved men were viewed as nearly an inch taller, almost four years older, and 13% stronger than their real-life selves. Unfortunately, the bald-headed ver sions of the men were still rated as less attractive than men with a full head of hair. Why are bald men seen as more powerful and dominant? The researchers theorize that in a society that prizes the vitality of hair, seeing someone purposefully give that up is also a signal of one’s status: “when people witness someone violate standards of acceptable or conventional behavior, they may infer the person is powerful.”Being seen as dominant helps you in the boardroom, which is why being bald may help you close deals. Citing previous research that links dominance to better outcome in negotiations, the researchers predict that “men with shaved heads will fare better economically in negotiations.”When in doubt, shave it offAlthough your attractiveness levels may decrease, the research shows that making the choice to go bald can increase your leadership potential.“Instead of spending billions each year trying to reverse or cure their hair loss, the counterintuitive prescription of this research to men experiencing male pattern baldness is to shave their heads,” the researchers advise. So if you’re a man with a receding hairline, don’t despair - take control of your destiny and head to your barber. As successful (and balding) comedian Larry David once proclaimed, “Anyone can be confident with a full head of hair. But a confident bald man â€" there’s your diamond in the rough.”

Unemployed What Do You Wish Your Friends Would Do

Unemployed What Do You Wish Your Friends Would Do What Do You Wish Your Friends Would Do? Unemployed What Do You Wish Your Friends Would Do Everyone lent a sympathetic ear right after you lost your job. And many people probably called you once or twice after that to see how you were coping. But now that your job search is a few months along, the flow of support has probably dried to a trickle, and you're feeling alone and cut off from the real world. It's not that your friends don't care anymore, but they might not know what else they can say or do to help you. So... true to human nature, they do and say the worst possible thing: nothing. It's up to you to give themsome suggestions! Do you wish your brother-in-law the recruiter would critique your resume for you? Do you wish your former supervisor would give you a LinkedIn recommendation? They'll probably be glad to do it, but you have to ask. For example, here's a request I wish I'd shared with more of my friends when I was looking for a job: Please force me to go out and do things with you! I tended to withdraw from social activities while I was out of work, so I always appreciated the friends who wouldn't take no for an answer. Just going out for lunch, a movie, or a scenic car ride could shake off that crushing sense of isolation. You can pay them back (or pay it forward) once you land a job.

Writing a Resume When You Havent Worked for Years

Writing a Resume When You Haven't Worked for Years Resume When You Haven't Worked for Years Writing a Resume When You Haven't Worked for Years We received a blog comment recently from a woman who had left the workforce 18 years ago to raise her children. Now she's looking to return to work, and wondering, What do I say on my resume, and where do I start? Since there are lots of people in this boat, I thought I'd answer this reader's question, and offer some tips for anyone who's looking to make the leap back into (paid) work after a long time away. Our reader summarized her former work experience like this: 5 years as a secretary at one company; 8 years of general clerical experience at three previous employers (including 4 years in the U.S. Army); and part-time employment on and off in retail, because the hours were flexible. She's been brushing up on her word processing and office skills, is willing to learn or be trained in new requirements, and is seeking a regular office job. How to Start the Resume Making some educated assumptions about the skills one uses while raising children and running a household, and combining those with her actual work history, I might start the resume something like this: SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS Administrative support professional with a total of 13 years' professional experience, including 4 years as a clerk in the U.S. Army Strong computer and office management skills Excellent time manager with extensive experience coordinating schedules, maintaining calendars, arranging transportation, and making travel arrangements Strengths include budgeting, managing accounts payable and receivable, maintaining supplies, and arranging repairs to equipment or facilities Outstanding interpersonal skills and commitment to customer service From there, I'd follow a typical resume template, presenting experience, education, etc. If there is relevant volunteer experience, that should be included, too. (Note: Some career advisors recommend using a functional resume format if you've been out for a long time, but most recruiters don't like them, and aren't fooled by the lack of dates.) How to Start the Cover Letter While the Summary of Qualifications above is all true, it could be a bit misleading since it doesn't mention that the 13 years of experience is from a long time ago. That's where the cover letter comes in. I would explain the situation in the cover letter, briefly, honestly, and in positive terms. Here's a sample cover letter opening: Dear Ms. SoSo, With more than 13 years' professional clerical experience, I believe I have the right combination of skills, personality, and work ethic to be a very effective contributor in the Assistant Office Manager role. I would appreciate the chance to meet with you to discuss this opportunity. For many years, I have been channeling my administrative support skills into raising, educating, transporting, and managing the busy schedules of three children, the youngest of whom just entered college. I am now looking forward to returning to an office setting where I can transfer my skillset back into the professional arena. Conclude the cover letter with any other details that support your ability to meet the employer's needs. Don't Limit Your Options One other tipfor returning workers is to not restrict yourself to the same field or industry you used to work in. For instance, our reader wants an office position. She should consider every type of business huge corporation, small-town accounting office, downtown hotel, non-profit foundation, school, hospital, insurance company, dental practice, factory ...and the list goes on. And don't forget about staffing agencies. (Temp work was my secret weapon for re-entering the workplace after 10 years at home.) They might even be able to help you sharpen your skills and get your feet wet with various types of short-term office jobs. The days of straight and narrow career paths are long gone. Workers leave their jobs for lots of reasons, stay away for months, years, or decades, then get back in. Stay positive, stay flexible, and think creatively about where your skills can help a business succeed, and your transition should be (relatively) painless.

The Advantages and Benefits of Public Service Work

The Advantages and Benefits of Public Service Work The Advantages and Benefits of Public Service Work Although there is a huge gap between private sector and public interest salaries, public interest jobs offer a number of key advantages over private practice. Below are six advantages of public service work. Furthering the Public Good A primary reason lawyers and others undertake  public interest  or  pro bono  work is to further the public good. Helping underserved people, groups, and causes can provide a feeling of personal satisfaction and achievement that you might not gain defending large corporations in private practice. Public interest work can allow you to achieve greater goals beyond earning a paycheck, such as working to effect societal change, supporting an important public cause, or providing equal access to justice for needy individuals and organizations. In fact, the lowest-paid lawyers (typically those doing public interest work) report the highest levels of happiness. Public interest and pro bono work also provide the opportunity to become involved in your local community by performing public service activities of a legal and non-legal nature. For students, it is sometimes easier to find  internships  with public interest employers than with law firms and for-profit organizations, who tend to hire on a very limited basis for summer jobs. And it’s sometimes possible to get funding for your public interest summer job from your law school or from a nationwide public interest organization, such as Equal Justice Works. Valuable Work Experience Law students, new lawyers, paralegals, and other legal professionals can gain valuable work experience through internships in the public interest sector or via pro bono work in law school. Such experience is important at a time when jobs are scarce; many employers do not have the time or resources to train new attorneys and legal personnel. Since small firms want to hire candidates who can hit the ground running, and large firms often funnel substantive legal work to experienced associates, working in the public interest sector can help you gain the work experience you need. Public interest work is a great stepping stone to private practice and employers appreciate a commitment to public service. Better Work-Life Balance Public interest jobs typically offer a better  work-life balance  than law firm jobs. 9-to-5 work days, flexible schedules and part-time opportunities are common in the public interest sector. Unlike private practice, individuals employed in non-profits, the government, and legal service organizations are not under pressure to meet high billable hour quotas, gain face-time with partners, or spend free time on client development activities. The work culture is often more relaxed because the focus is on service rather than profit. Exposure to Multiple Practice Areas When you join a law firm, you are typically assigned to a specific practice group. However, public service and pro bono work can help new grads explore a  variety of practice areas  while performing valuable work. At a legal service organization, for example, you might assist with a variety of cases ranging from landlord/tenant  and immigration issues to child custody and civil rights. You will gain valuable insight and useful knowledge in the procedural and substantive issues surrounding many areas of law. Mentoring and Networking Opportunities If you are a student or new graduate, public interest and pro bono work can also help you gain mentors, networking contacts, and job references. While law firms and corporations are often focused on the bottom line, public interest venues are less focused on profit. Therefore, they may offer more time to develop mentoring relationships and contacts. And taking on a pro bono project organized by the local bar association can be a great way to meet practicing attorneys in areas of particular interest since they often volunteer to serve as mentors to newer volunteers. Recognition and Honors Lawyers have an ethical obligation to provide public service and give back to the community. This duty also extends to some other legal professionals, such as paralegals. Many law firms and legal organizations recognize and honor lawyers and legal professionals who have demonstrated leadership in their community by engaging in public service and pro bono activities. Hiring managers also appreciate a commitment to pro bono and public service work. Therefore, this type of work experience can be a great resume-booster.

This is why you shouldnt blindly trust a candidate saying yes to a job offer

This is why you shouldn't blindly trust a candidate saying 'yes' to a job offer This is why you shouldn't blindly trust a candidate saying 'yes' to a job offer Let an embarrassing week for a New York City mayor be a case study in not prematurely announcing a hire.On Wednesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office triumphantly announced that his city had poached Miami superintendent Alberto Carvalho to become New York City’s next school chancellor. In a press release, Mayor de Blasio said that he had found “the best person to lead the nation’s largest school system into the future.” Twenty-four hours later, Carvalho would dramatically back out of the job during a public meeting broadcasted live on television Thursday.NYC mayor loses candidate after  announcing his hire During an emergency school board meeting packed with board members, students, and supporters the day after de Blasio’s statement, Carvalho had a public change of heart, citing the children of Miami as his reason. “I am breaking an agreement between adults to honor an agreement and a pact I have with the children of Miami,” Carvalho said to cheers in the room. According to de Blasio and to Carvalho’s own account, Carvalho had verbally accepted the New York City job a week prior. Mayor de Blasio said that he was “very surprised” by Carvalho’s last-minute snub since Carvalho had been on board when they talked on the phone as late as Wednesday night.  Ã¢€œHe told me repeatedly this was his dream job,”  de Blasio told reporters Thursday. “He said yes over a week ago, he authorized the story being  given to Politico,” Mayor de Blasio explained. “He negotiated terms and conditions in detail with Dean [Fuleihan], affirmed his plans many times over with for how we would go through an announcement.” How you should announce a new hire But in the end, this verbal enthusiasm ended up not amounting to enough. For companies and employees watching this debacle unfold in real-time, there are takeaways to learn even if we are not working on a national stage. It’s a lesson in curbing your enthusiasm.  Ã¢€œUntil the first day of employment, it’s a negotiation,” human resources expert  Amy Polefrone, CEO of the  HR Strategy Group, told Ladders.   She advises companies to publicly announce a hire as close to the start date as possible: “I would recommend probably within a month to announce, ‘Yes, someone is starting, we’ve made a selection.’ ” For positions not in this kind of visibility, Polefrone recommends “not making public announcements until the first day.” How to handle a change of heart or rejection If you’re an employee in Carvalho’s position, who is having second thoughts, Polefrone advises you to proactively raise your concerns and be discreet about your withdrawal: “The longer the interview courtship goes on, obviously, the more serious the employer thinks you are. There can be so many hurt feelings if you back out. It just has to be done quickly. Help people understand why sooner rather than later.” If you, like Mayor de Blasio, have just been publicly spurned by your top candidate in the eleventh hour of hiring, put the rejection in perspective. “For the employer, I think it’s important not to take these things so personally. These things do happen. Candidates do rescind an offer and it’s most likely not about the employer, it’s more about the employee’s particular situation,” Polefrone said. “If the person is not ready to make the change, it’s good that they’re not going to come work for you, because then they are not going to be fully engaged or committed to helping lead that organization.” Maybe Mayor de Blasio’s Press Secretary, Eric Phillips, should take this advice to heart:
